The EMCEE/Rapper

In the annals of Hip Hop History the MC (Master of Ceremonies) was hip-hop’s vocalist who commands the microphone, moves the crowd, and controls the energy of a live, usually DJ-led, performance. Originating from early park parties, MCs transitioned from announcing DJs to delivering complex lyrical rhymes. Key skills include freestyling, flow, and crowd engagement.

The distinction between an MC (Master of Ceremonies) and a “rapper” is a foundational concept in hip-hop culture, often summarized by the phrase: “An MC can rap, but a rapper can never MC”. While both roles involve delivering rhymes over a beat, the MC is defined by their deeper, traditional connection to hip-hop, focusing on live performance, crowd control, and the “art of the party.
